Fifty Years in the Making: The La Pata Gap Closure Has Broken Ground!

It’s been a long time coming, but the much anticipated, much needed La Pata Gap Closure project broke ground on April 4th.  Below is a picture from the groundbreaking ceremony that was tweeted by various participants and news outlets:

There have been signs of progress even before Friday’s groundbreaking.  Anyone driving north on the San Juan Capistrano side of La Pata Avenue will notice the surveyors stakes along the side of the road, foreshadowing the eventual widening of that segment to two lanes.  As a reminder, the project map is below:

The San Clemente Times has an article which mentions the significance of this milestone:

San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Orange County officials smiled throughout Friday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate a more than 50-year journey to provide a link between the two cities and an additional option for area drivers.
