Rancho Mission Viejo Wants to be your Friend

Talk about serendipity.  Today seems to be social media day on the Ranch.  First, we installed our social media sharing buttons here on the blog.  Moments later, we saw this press release announcing that Rancho Mission Viejo Company had created a Facebook page and wanted to introduce you to the “faces” of the Ranch.  Apparently, we aren’t the only ones thinking about social media.  According to the press release:

“Rancho Mission Viejo offers so much, to so many, that we thought the best way to introduce this place was through the people who plan its communities, manage its open spaces, farm its fields, operate its cattle ranch, and run businesses within its borders,” said Nadine Corrigan, Vice President of Marketing for Rancho Mission Viejo, LLC.

“Our new Facebook page will allow us to interact directly with people who want to learn about all that happens on The Ranch,” added Corrigan. “It also will allow us to post photos and videos, engage with people around common interests, and provide information about all the different Ranch and South OC events being conducted nearby and nearly every week. We look forward to an expanded conversation with the community; and we invite everyone to become a Rancho Mission Viejo Facebook friend or a fan today.”

Here is the Rancho Mission Viejo Facebook page.  The page was created in April of this year — in anticipation of the Sendero announcement, no doubt — but saw no activity until last month.  After adding some content, RMV issued its press release earlier this week causing the number of visits and likes to soar, according to the Facebook page stats.

So far, the Facebook page contains some beautiful photos and high-definition videos of the Ranch, such as this photo — currently the page’s cover photo:

“Great photo of RMV” says Rancho Mission Viejo’s own Dan Kelly in the comments.

The Ranch Facebook page also introduces us to some of the “faces” of the Ranch, including those who work on and manage the Ranch.  The videos are very interesting and provide a unique glimpse inside the Ranch land and operations.  We encourage you to visit the page, explore the videos and photos, and perhaps even “like” it.

The press release also includes some new hints about Sendero and the gated senior community of Gavilan:

The first new-home village on The Ranch will be Sendero, currently scheduled to open in summer 2013. Encompassing approximately 690 acres and offering approximately 940 attached and detached homes and 200 apartment units, Sendero will include the gated active adult enclave of Gavilan, providing 285 single-level residences adjacent to a private clubhouse and recreational facilities. Among the amenities planned for all Sendero residents are a centrally located community hall, clubhouses and recreational core, a 15-acre community park, the vegetable and fruit gardens of Sendero Farm, neighborhood parks, hiking/biking trails accessing Reserve trails and a County Regional hiking and biking trails network, a 10-acre retail plaza, fire station, and a child day care center.

So Sendero will feature a neighborhood farm containing fruit and vegetable gardens?  Interesting.

As for floor plans and pricing, Rancho Mission Viejo responds to one Facebook question as follows:

Early this fall, we will launch the Rancho Mission Viejo community website which will provide a comprehensive view of the plans for the first village including Sendero and Gavilan amenities and recreational facilities. In addition, a detailed outlook of our neighborhood builder home programs will be featured including floor plans, elevations, square footages, lot sizes and home pricing. Everything you will need and want to know about Sendero will be included on this site. We will be sure to keep you updated with our official launch date soon. Thank you for your continued interest in Rancho Mission Viejo.

But let’s return for a minute to the new social media presence being embraced by the Ranch.  One of our complaints about Rancho Mission Viejo, indeed the reason we are here, is because there is so little information publicly available about the Ranch Plan and RMV’s plans for the area.  Rancho Mission Viejo Company has always seemed a little secretive, in our opinion.  Before we arrived, Google results relating to the Ranch Plan and its impact on the area were non-existent.  So we have painstakingly read them and compiled links and excerpts here at the Rancho Ortega Blog as a resource for anyone who is interested.  As a privately owned, family run business, confidentiality is RMV’s right.  However, that right must be balanced with the public interest surrounding the development of 23,000 acres of land and 14,000 new residences in connection with the creation of what will in all likelihood be the next Orange County city.   Those of us who live on or around the Ranch care deeply what happens in this area.  Many of us moved here for the family friendly environment like that in Ladera Ranch, or the sense of rural living that South Orange County has preserved in areas such as Coto de Caza, or for the history in and around San Juan Capistrano, or for the spectacular open space and views — none of which would be possible, we acknowledge, without Rancho Mission Viejo.  We’re not NIMBYs — we understand that development can, will and frankly, should occur on the Ranch.  But we want that development to be carried out in a manner that embraces and enhances what makes South Orange County special, not change it.  So if Rancho Mission Viejo is sincere about sharing more information about their plans and, more importantly, listening to their friends, neighbors and potential customers — well, we think that is a good thing.

We will monitor the Rancho Mission Viejo Facebook page for future updates and information, and of course we will offer our opinion on them here.
