After nearly a decade, Poseidon Water’s reverse osmosis desalination plant in Carlsbad is almost complete. Schedule to be operational next year, the Carlsbad plant will be California’s largest desalination facility and if successful, it will supply San Diego County with 50 million gallons of drinking water every day. In the midst of an historic drought, an unlimited local source of drinking water is the holy grail for Southern California water agencies. They are not without controversy, however. According to this article, “desalination plants have long been a hot button issue in the Golden State, and the Carlsbad plant is no exception. Delayed by lawsuits filed by environmental groups, an arduous permitting process and cost concerns, the Carlsbad plant has some folks waiting with caution to see how it performs.” Others watching the Carlsbad plant include the Santa Margarita Water District which has signed a letter of intent indicating that SMWD is considering buying desalinated water when Poseidon’s Huntington Beach desalination plant is completed.
