SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The northbound San Diego Freeway (I-5) off-ramp at Ortega Highway will be closed for two weeks beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8 through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22.
The two-week closure will allow crews to complete work on a significant portion of the off-ramp as part of the I-5 / Ortega Highway Interchange Improvement Project.
Detours during the closure include Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road.
For drivers exiting northbound I-5 at Camino Capistrano:
- Turn left at Valle Road to San Juan Creek Road. Continue right on San Juan Creek Road to get to eastside businesses.
- Continue left on San Juan Creek Road to get to Historic Town Center and the Los Rios District via Camino Capistrano
For drivers exiting northbound I-5 at Junipero Serra Road:
- Turn right on Junipero Serra, then right on Rancho Viejo Road to get to eastside businesses.
- Turn left on Junipero Serra to get to Historic Town Center and the Los Rios District via Camino Capistrano.
The closure is the first of four long-term closures planned during the next several months. Specific dates have not yet been determined. Future closures include:
- Southbound I-5 on-ramp from Ortega Highway for six weeks
- Ortega Highway between southbound I-5 ramps and Del Obispo for three weeks
- Ortega Highway between El Camino Real and Del Obispo for four weeks
The I-5 / Ortega Highway Interchange Improvement Project, when completed, will provide congestion relief to improve local traffic flow as well as ease regional commutes. The project will also relieve the existing traffic chokepoint at the I-5 / Ortega Highway interchange and improve traffic safety for drivers. The $86 million project is funded through various state and local sources.
