Planning Commission Delays Vote on Downtown San Juan Hotel Project

The Capistrano Dispatch has an article about the San Juan Capistrano Planning Commission’s decision last week to delay an approval vote on a large development project proposed for downtown San Juan Capistrano adjacent to Historic Town Center Park.  The $43 million project would include a 136-room boutique hotel, 33 residential townhomes and 2,700 square feet of commercial space on a 3 acre parcel of property on Camino Capistrano.  The project would also extend Forster Street through to Del Obispo Street.  The site of the proposed project is shown on the map below:

The project developers have made a number of changes to the project proposal in an attempt to obtain City approval.  As reported by the Dispatch:

Urban Village Principal Joshua Host presented revised plans to the commission, following a joint workshop between the City Council and the commission in March and after working with an ad-hoc committee to address their concerns. Changes included scaling back the hotel from the historic Egan House, changing its color from white, creating a breezeway from Forster Street through the hotel and to the nearby Mercado Village shopping center and adding bike and pedestrian pathways at the park.

We think this project — if well designed and executed — is exactly the type of development that downtown San Juan Capistrano needs: a luxury boutique hotel (of which the city has none), within walking distance of the train station, Mission San Juan Capistrano, historic Los Rios Street and all of San Juan’s downtown shops and restaurants.
