Earlier today, we mentioned that a recent Patch article about a new CUSD school gave us the name of Planning Area 2 here. Esencia! Speaking of that new school, our friend and CUSD Trustee Jim Reardon has suggested that the K-8 school be named the “Richard J. O’Neill School” in honor of Rancho Mission Viejo patriarch Richard J. O’Neill. Apparently, the family and Rancho Mission Viejo are considering it. The item is on the agenda for the January 8th CUSD Board meeting, here.
Given the location and significance of the new school, we wholeheartedly endorse the suggestion. And while some of the geographically significant alternatives are also compelling (such as Upper Mesa, Verdugo Pasture, Horseshoe Pasture and Lower Trabuco, or our own suggestion of Chiquita Canyon), we would generally disfavor generic names like Adanza, Escalada and Saliente. But above all else, there is no one more responsible for the stewardship of Rancho Mission Viejo and inland South County than Richard O’Neill, and it seems only natural and appropriate that a school might honor his legacy by carrying his name.
