San Juan City Council Votes to Repeal Newspaper Ban

The San Juan Capistrano City Council has voted to repeal a ban on newspapers at City Hall and the City-owned Community Center.  It is proposing to repeal the ban in order to settle the lawsuit brought by the publishers of Community Common Sense, a newspaper that has been critical of the current Council majority.  The proposal still needs the agreement of Community Common Sense before the case can be dismissed.  This is the right approach for the City.  It is unclear to us what possible legal basis the City believed it had to ban newspapers from city property and we are glad that it has chosen to reconsider its policy in order to avoid expensive and time-consuming litigation.  You can read the details of the proposed settlement at the SJC Patch here.
