I-5/Ortega Highway Interchange Construction Update for the Week of November 25

Below is this week’s construction update for the I-5/Ortega Highway interchange project, courtesy of Caltrans:

  • In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, crews will not perform any nighttime closures from Wednesday, November 27 through Sunday, November 30. Regularly scheduled closures will resume on Monday, December 2.
  • Ortega Highway will be closed at night in both directions between Del Obispo Street and Rancho Viejo Road on Sunday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 26 between 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m. These closures are necessary for crews to perform bridgework. The pedestrian walkway on Ortega Highway over the I-5 freeway will be accessible during these closures. Please see the project Google map for suggested detours.
  • On Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, crews will perform simultaneous full closures on the northbound and southbound I-5 freeway in order to complete grading activities on the Ortega Highway bridge. The freeway will be closed on both nights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Caltrans is aware of the San Juan Capistrano Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 7 and will work to minimize the impacts of the full freeway closures to the traveling public.

In addition, below are the scheduled freeway closures, ramp closures and lane reductions:

Full Closures:

  • Eastbound Ortega Highway closed between Del Obispo Street and Rancho Viejo Road
    • Closed on Sunday, 11/24 and Tuesday, 11/26 between
      11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Westbound Ortega Highway closed between Rancho Viejo Road and Del Obispo Street.
    • Closed on Sunday, 11/24 and Tuesday, 11/26 between
      11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Ramp Closures:

  • Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Ortega Highway (SR-74) closed
    • Ramp closed nightly, Sunday, 11/24 through Tuesday, 11/26 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Northbound I-5 on-ramp from Ortega Highway (SR-74) closed
    • Ramp closed nightly, Sunday, 11/24  through Tuesday, 11/26 between 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Southbound I-5 off-ramp to Ortega Highway (SR-74) closed
    • Ramp closed nightly, Sunday, 11/24 through Tuesday, 11/26 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Southbound I-5 on-ramp from Ortega Highway (SR-74) closed
    • Ramp closed nightly, Sunday, 11/24  through Tuesday, 11/26 between 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Lane Reductions

  • Lane reduction on the northbound I-5 freeway between Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road
    • Lane closures nightly, Sunday, 11/24  through Tuesday, 11/26 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. 
  • Lane reduction on the southbound I-5 freeway between Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano
    • Lane Closures nightly, Monday, 11/24 through Tuesday, 11/26 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
