Recall Petition Approved; Supporters May Now Seek Signatures

The Capistrano Dispatch has the latest on the recall.  Residents for Honest Government, the group backing the recall of Councilman Sam Allevato, received approval from the City Clerk on its proposed petition.  According to the Dispatch:

The recall organizers, Residents for Honest Government, now have 120 day to gather signatures from 20 percent of San Juan Capistrano’s 17,511 registered voters, or 3,503 signatures. The deadline to turn in the petition is March 7.

Our position is that residents of San Juan Capistrano should refuse to sign the recall petition.  This personal vendetta is a poorly conceived political strategy designed to shift the Council majority a year prior to the next election.  While many voters may disagree with Allevato’s votes on the Council, it is our opinion that nothing he has done rises to the standard of (mis)behavior that would justify an expensive and divisive recall campaign.
