I-5/Ortega Construction Update for the Week of July 22

Ortega construction update from Caltrans:

Construction Overview:

Crews will demolish the south half of the Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 freeway on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3. The demolition will take place over two consecutive nights, with crews demolishing one portion of the south half of the bridge one night, and the remaining portion the second night. While most of the work is expected to be completed during the two nights, demolition activities may carry over into the next weekend, if needed.

In order to complete the demolition and ensure public safety, the following nighttime closures will take place:

  • Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 Freeway
  • Northbound I-5 Freeway
  • Southbound I-5 Freeway

Beginning the week of July 21, the contractor will begin staging work in preparation for the demolition of the southern portion of the Ortega Highway bridge. Work will include median barrier demolition, lost deck removal and equipment mobilization.

While the Ortega Highway bridge is under construction, Caltrans would like to remind motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to always practice safety in the construction zone. Pedestrian crossing lights are timed to maximize traffic flow and ensure pedestrian safety, and may have pedestrians wait up to two cycles before crossing.
