Ortega/I-5 Construction Overview for the Week of June 10

If you’ve just crawled out from a cave in the woods and plan to use the freeway today, here is the Ortega/I-5 construction overview for this week, courtesy of Caltrans:

On Saturday, June 1, crews reduced lanes on the Ortega Highway bridge over the I-5 freeway to two lanes in either direction in preparation for upcoming demolition activities on the south half of the bridge.  During this configuration, motorists can expect delays and are  encouraged to use alternate routes to reach their destination. In addition to exiting Junipero Serra Road, motorists may also exit Camino Capistrano and follow detour signage back to Ortega Highway.

Caltrans has worked closely with the City of San Juan Capistrano to develop a traffic management plan that includes the following streets as approved detour routes during construction:

  • Rancho Viejo Road
  • San Juan Creek Road / Valle Road
  • La Novia Avenue
  • Camino Capistrano
  • Del Obispo Street
  • Junipero Serra Road

While the Ortega Highway bridge is under construction, Caltrans would like to remind motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to always practice safety in the construction zone. Pedestrian crossing lights are timed to maximize traffic flow and ensure pedestrian safety, and may have pedestrians wait up to two cycles before crossing.

Scheduled nighttime closure(s) from Sunday, June 9 through Saturday, June 15 include:

Lane Reductions:

  • Lane reduction on the northbound I-5 freeway between Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road
  • Lane closures nightly Monday, 6/10  through Thursday, 6/13 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Lane reduction on the southbound I-5 freeway between Junipero Serra Road and Camino Capistrano
  • Lane closures nightly Monday, 6/10  through Thursday, 6/13 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
