Given all of its recent troubles, certainly the eventual closure of San Onofre was a possibility. But we had no idea that it would happen so soon, or that the decision would be made by SCE (albeit in response to a series of adverse regulatory rulings). Yet, today, that’s what SCE (co-owner of the nuclear facility) announced. SONGS, the San Onofre nuclear power facility, will be closed forever. The San Clemente Patch is on the story.
Southern California Edison announced Friday it will permanently shut down the San Onofre nuclear power plant, leading to 1,100 lost jobs.
Ted Craver, chairman and CEO of Edison International, SCE’s parent company, cited uncertainty about when the two units at the plant, which were taken offline after a radioactive steam leak, would be allowed to restart.
“We have concluded that the continuing uncertainty about when or if SONGS might return to service was not good for our customers, our investors, or the need to plan for our region’s long-term electricity needs,” he said in a statement released from the company’s headquarters in Rosemead.
